As an app owner, you will have content that you want to make available to anyone who downloads your app, and content that you would like to protect or "gate". Tags are the way you can gate or protect content from being viewed, but also a way to share content with specific users or audiences in your app. Here are some examples of how you might use tags in various scenarios:
- You want users to register or opt-in (so you have their email for marketing) before giving away a piece of content.
- You want users to pay for a piece of content before they get access to it.
- You have content that is only suitable/applicable for a specific group of users (eg: current clients or students)
- You want to create different experiences for different "tiers" of clients (eg: memberships)
- You want to "hide" content that isn't ready or needs to be temporarily invisible
You can view or manage tags under MANAGE in the Creator Portal:
The FREE Tag
When you go into the Creator Portal for the very first time and view your tags, you will by default have the FREE tag. You cannot delete/edit this tag. This is a very special tag, in that it is the only tag your users will not use the Track Now (on mobile) or Unlock Code (on web) button to unlock. This tag has been uniquely linked to the Login/Register area of the app.
When an app user registers and becomes a member of your app, the FREE tag will be added to their account and it will automatically unlock all content that has been given the FREE tag. You might think of this as the content your users are trading their email for.
ALL other tags and the content they gate, will be accessed or "unlocked" by using the Track Now button to enter the 6-digit unlock code associated with the tag.
Creating New Tags
To create a new tag, click on the Add Tag button:
Fill out the fields in the New Tag form:
First select what type of tag it is:
- Content
- Virtual Event
- Summit
Most of the tags you create will be Content tags. The other two options are very specific to Virtual Events and Summits.
NOTE: Setting up a Summit with VIPs? VIP Summit tags are a type of Content tag as they pertain to content within your summit, where Summit tags pertain to your summit as whole
Give your tag a name in the Tag Name field and copy the same name into the Tag field, but with no spaces. If you would like a reminder of what the tag is going to be used for, you can create a short description in the Tag Created For field.
Tag Notifications
If you want to know when someone has unlocked a specific tag:
- Enter the email address you wish to receive notification at, in the Notification Email field.
- Switch the Send Email toggle to ON.
You will now get email notification whenever anyone enters that tag's unlock code.
Pro Tip: The very first tags that we recommend creating is the HIDE and PREVIEW tags. These are a Content type tag and are extremely useful for testing out the changes you make in the Creator Portal.
It works like this:
Create your own Member login account and use the unlock code for the preview tag on yourself. Give no one else the unlock code for the preview tag. You can now tag any content or changes you make in the Creator Portal with the preview tag. Then you can view them live, but only visible to you.
This is a great way to see how things are going to look in the app/web before you give the rest of your users access. You can test to make sure that things are working correctly and when you're ready to commit, remove the preview tag. Alternatively, if you want content to be invisible to everyone, including you, add the hide tag to the content to remove it from the web/app view so that nobody can see it. This is great for archiving content or preventing yourself from seeing WIP content while you preview other content you're preparing. If you think your content is missing, always double check you didn't leave the hide tag on by accident!
Customize Confirmation Screen
A custom confirmation screen (or custom unlock screen) is a way to give specific instructions to an app user after they Track or Unlock a tag in your app. You have the option of customizing these screens, tailoring them depending on if the user is using your app on a mobile device or on a desktop/laptop.
The best use of a custom confirmation screen is in the web version, for users on desktops or laptops. The WYSIWYG feature allows you to add formatting, images, and clickable hyperlinks that are not available in the mobile version of your app.
This functionality is also available in Courses as well.
See the article Creating a Custom Confirmation Screen for more information.
Tagging Your Content
Every content type in your app has a Tags field where you can select a tag or multiple tags if you choose:
Things To Know Before You Tag Content
If you want your content to be available to EVERYONE who views your app, don't put a tag on it. The minute you put a tag on a piece of content, it won't be visible to anyone who does not "track" or "unlock" the tag.
Adding Multiple Tags
Yes, you can have multiple tags on a single piece of content! This can be very helpful if you have protected content that different segments of your audience needs to access.
If there are multiple tags assigned to a piece of content, a user only needs to have 1 of those tags to access it, not all of them.
Tagging Directories or Topics/Listings
When you add a tag to a directory or topic, the entire directory or topic and all the content within it is protected. You don't have to add the tag to each individual piece of content in that directory or topic in order to gate it.
Courses
Courses have their own tagging feature. You do not need to add an additional tag to a course if you want everyone to be able to purchase or register for it.
